DEAbout this tour
The queue outside Pastéis de Belém is famous, and on a summer afternoon it runs down the street. You will walk past it.
We take you in through the side, into the kitchen, where you watch the tarts being shaped and filled by hand — the recipe has been the same since 1837 and only a handful of people know it. Then you eat one warm, with cinnamon, which is the only correct way and not what you get from a supermarket box.
From there it’s a short ride through Belém. We stop for photographs at Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO site and the high point of Manueline architecture; when the queue is short, you can step into the church where Vasco da Gama is buried. Then the Belém Tower on the water, and the Discoveries Monument with its enormous compass rose set into the pavement.
We finish at MAAT, the wave-shaped modern museum on the riverbank, and walk up its roof for the view back across the Tagus to the 25 de Abril bridge.

About the Belém tour
Do we really skip the queue?
Yes. The kitchen visit is arranged in advance and goes in through a separate entrance, so you don’t join the line on the street.
Can we go inside the monastery?
The church, usually — admission is free and we go in when the line is short. The cloisters are ticketed separately and aren’t included; tell us in advance if you want them and we’ll plan the time for it.
Can this be combined with a city tour?
